How to make glass look grimy and old?
I'm doing a 3D project for an art class, and I want to know how to make new glass vials have an antique, pretty grimy appearence. Any suggestions?
Although there are complicated ways, I would suggest a clear lacquer spray like Krylon and after you spray it on and it gets a bit tacky, roll it in your hands and/or lightly on a carpet. You may have to try various dirty surfaces. What you are doing is keeping some of the transparency of the spray, but messing it up. If you find the Krylon dries too fast, you might try polyurethane varnish. When I have been working with it (with latex gloves on) it gets tacky fairly quickly in thin layers, but has a working time. With the varnish, I would transfer it from hand to hand and perhaps dirty up what is on the hands on a concrete surface or by picking up dry branches, then grip the vials to transfer dirty varnish unevenly.
